Hemendra Kumar Roy

হেমেন্দ্রকুমার রায়

1888–1963

Hemendra Kumar Roy (1888–1963) was one of the most beloved Bengali writers of his generation. Born in Kolkata, he pioneered detective fiction and adventure literature for Bengali readers at a time when the genre barely existed in the language.

His two most celebrated creations — the detective duo Jayanta and Manik, and the adventurers Bimal and Kumar — defined the childhoods of generations of Bengali readers. Where Sherlock Holmes had Watson, Jayanta had the irrepressible Manik. Where Rider Haggard had Africa, Roy had Bengal, Burma, and the deep jungles of Assam.

He wrote over 80 books. Almost none have been translated into English. That is what Paar is here to change.
